Nurse, clinical and developmental psychologist, and bioethicist. Professor at the University of Ibadan since 2018.
A career built across three disciplines
Adebayo Olayiwola Adejumo began his working life as a nurse, qualifying in general nursing in 1985 and in perioperative nursing in 1991. In 1993 he was named Best Nurse of the Year by the Nursing Education Unit of University College Hospital, Ibadan.
His clinical experience led him to psychology. He earned a BSc in Nursing, an MSc in Clinical Psychology and a PhD in Developmental Psychology at the University of Ibadan. His doctoral work examined psychosocial factors and behavioural techniques among adolescents in Ibadan.
A Fogarty scholarship then took him to the University of Toronto, where he completed an MHSc in Research and Clinical Bioethics in 2005. Ethics has been central to his work ever since.
He joined the Department of Psychology at Ibadan as Lecturer II in 2006 and became Professor in 2018. He served as Head of Department from 2021 to 2023 and now chairs the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Ethics Committee and the University's Ethics Policy Review Committee. He is also Editor-in-Chief of the Research Journal of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
Beyond Ibadan, he helped draft Nigeria's National Code for Health Research Ethics, served on the National Health Research Ethics Committee for over a decade, and represented Nigeria on a WHO review of an investigational Ebola vaccine study.
